Harvest Moon, October 1, 2020

The Rule: Sketch a scene. Paint a 16” x 20” watercolor from the schemata.

Twenty Four 16x20” watercolor paintings, bound into two accordion books, Night and Day, each 16” x 240” fully extended

Wanting to further the distance between my paintings and my photographs, I decided to forgo photographs and paint from sketches made on site.  I made small, “thumbnail” sized sketches in my sketchbook and made a few notes about the color of the sky or what I saw.  Sometimes I made a voice recording to describe the scene as well. My sketches improved over time, or at least provided more information for my paintings.  At the beginning of the Moon my sketches seemed woefully inadequate.
The full moon that arrives closest to the Autumnal Equinox is considered the Harvest Moon.  In 2020, the Harvest moon arrived after the equinox, arriving in October.  Between 1970 and 2050 there are 18 years when the Harvest Moon comes in October; the next time will be in 2028.
